Helping at Events
Helping at events in LOC
There are many roles that help to put on an event. Here are the main ones….
Organiser: Leads the team of helpers to put on the event. This includes many jobs before, during and after the event.
Planner: Creates the courses, checks and tapes the control sites, puts out the controls for the event.
Controller: Works with the planner and the organiser, to check that everything is running ok. For big events, from another club.
Safety: For local events, where a full controller is not required, safety will check the courses and offer assistance.
First Aid: Either at registration, or at the finish control.
SI and WEB : get everything ready for the event.
And other helpers, especially on large events.
Parking : especially if the parking is limited. May also collect parking fee.
Registration meet and greet: Essential for newcomers.
SI entry: Entry on the day, or entry changes.
SI download: Check everyone has run ok, and congratulate finishers.
Start: Could be one person for a local event, or a team for a large event.
On course marshals: eg on gates, road crossings, water issue
Finish: check finishers are ok, and direct them to download,
Control collectors: A good task to practice your navigation.
Control waking up: This is needed for big events where the controls are put out the day before, waking up controls for early runners with SI Air dibbers.
The main roles for each event, and everyone helping at larger events get volunteer credits, which can be used to pay for entry to events, or club kit.
If you are doing something for the first time there will be someone to help/guide/mentor you.
