Types of Orienteering Events to go to in LOC
Local Regional National or Major
There are 4 different levels of orienteering events.
Local events are the smallest, held for members of the club, but you can go to other club’s local events too. They can be planned and organised by the same person. 2-4 courses.
Regional events are bigger, and invite members of other clubs. The inter club galoppen series are regionals. 8 courses. Separate controller, organiser and planner.
National events are even bigger. These would include the NW championships.
Major events are the biggest events, and include the British championships. The Lake District has many good areas so often hosts the Major events.
LOC events or WCOC SROC BL
Unlike other sports, orienteers can enter events organised by any club. Get the details from their website. Some events require pre entering, others you can turn up on the day.
Easy of terrain….
There is a huge variety of terrain across all the different areas: Easy parkland, urban streets with intricate ally ways, woodland, high, and low fells, sand dunes and tricky forests. Also be aware of more bracken in the summer.
If you don’t know an area, check on the terrain details on the web site.
Or the “maps” section of the website. Technical difficulty goes from 1(easy) to 5(most difficult).
Easy: Cunswick Scar, Birkrigg Common, Fell Foot
Difficult: Grizedale, Greythwaite
High: Caw, Stickle Pike, Pike O Blisco, Lingmoor
