Save the new date - LOC Fifty (2nd) Anniversary Party
Lakeland's much postponed 50th Anniversary Party has a(nother) date! Please make a note of the new date in your 2022 diary: Friday 1st July 2022.
It should be a great party with dinner and a ceilidh at Kendal Rugby Club. We've chosen a summer date so that we can, hopefully, spread out into the outdoors.
We look forward to seeing you all then
British Orienteering Long Distance Championships and Junior Home Internationals
British Orienteering Long Distance Championships
Congratulations to Laura Brown who won the W16 silver medal at the recent British Orienteering Long Distance Championships on the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows (Devon). Laura was close to winning W16 having had several fastest legs but finished about a minute (54.38) behind Daisie Rennie of WCOC (53.14). her superb run can be seen on the route gadget link
Increasing the complexity of the vast area of dunes were multiple criss-crossing paths and tracks, many not on the map! making relocation a bit of a nightmare.
The other success from the small LOC contingent was Carol McNeill’s win in W75 – traveling through torrential rain & thunderstorms to retain her title.

Junior Home Internationals
Laura also ran for England in the JHIs the following weekend.
Heather Heppenstall - 2021LiaDLakes in a Day Ultra, Caldbeck to Cartmel, 50 miles, 4000m climb
I decided I wanted to challenge myself and get back in to some longer races again after having the kids. Pre kids (Chris and) I had done a certain amount of adventure racing and mountain marathons but never anything of the scale of LiaD. But I thought it would be a good challenge!
Here are some of my thoughts on the race:

New LOC coaches (2021)
New LOC coaches qualified thanks to a £1,000 grant from the Orienteering Foundation.
Iain Smith-Ward, Gill Browne and Jean Bell are working on their Level 2 coaching award, we wish them success in their final assessments.
Six members also attended an ‘Introduction to Coaching’ day.
Having the ‘OF’ grant made a big difference to enabling these to take place and our investment in coaches. Look out for more of these in the coming months.
Many thanks must go to Derek Allison for being the tutor for these courses.
