Spring Series Event 1

Local level event

What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

It was such a lovely evening tonight for the first event in this year's Spring Series of events and Stockbird Head is an interesting area, thankfully with no bracken, but lots of bluebells ! We hope you enjoyed your courses.

Many thanks to tonight's planner Matt, Nick for pre-event safety and Alan on the night, Alan as Series Co-ordinator, Kev for parking and first aid cover, Sandy also for first aid cover, Rebecca and Michael N for manning the finish, the control collectors Carol, Rebecca, Matt and James and the SI Team of Ali, Mike and Sandy.

Please note on the long course only - there appears to be an issue with one of the boxes used tonight, you will notice a very odd looking split time to no 14 !

Also many thanks to Old Hall Farm for allowing us to use their parking.

Overview

A series of four orienteering events is the South Lakes.

There are courses suitable for all. The longer courses (Long and Short) will be technical courses designed for more experienced orienteers. The Yellow course is the easiest at this event, suitable for beginners and children and the Orange course is designed for older Juniors, as they gain confidence and newcomer adults.

Map / Terrain

Stockbird head consists of two connected areas of deciduous woodland. The southern part has some gradients with intricate contours, while the flatter north offers a network of line features with plenty of knolls, boulders and re-entrants . If the bracken hasn't grown much it will be runnable.

The orange course involves following a stream. If its been raining it is likely to be flowing and deep in places. It does not need to be crossed on this course. Long and Short do cross it. It can be jumped in places, or waded.

All courses involve crossing a minor stream which is shallow.

Scale 1:5000 and 5 m contours.

Map last updated in year 2026.

The map will be size A4 and printed on waterproof paper.

Full leg cover is compulsory.

If the weather is bad you may be required to carry a hooded waterproof jacket, and potentially hat, gloves and waterproof trousers. You should bring these to the event and notices will be displayed in the car park and at the start.

You must carry a whistle.
