Report

It was another lovely evening tonight, for the latest in our Spring Series of events, following the small gap whilst we were all pre-occupied with the British Champs event, thank you for joining us, we hope you enjoyed Rob's courses tonight !

Many thanks to all of tonight's volunteers - Rob B for planning, Hollie for safety, Sandy & Rach as series co-ordinators, Gill & Rick for car parking, Caroline for first aid, the control collectors Gill, Liz. Lindsey, Sam, Jamie, Michael, Carol and Iain and the SI Team of Ali & Mike.

"Thanks to everyone who turned up this evening to Stockbird Head. I hope you enjoyed the challenge, I can only apologise for the bracken, particularly in the early part of the courses, it definitely added another layer of navigation for you all. I had real fun planning the event with some help from Hollie. It was nice to try something a bit different with the butterfly loops on the long course as well as trying to mix some of the leg lengths up. I hope you enjoyed ending your courses in the slightly flatter, more more intricate part of the map. It was great to see some kids having a go at the Yellow and Orange courses whilst enjoying the challenge of following other features like streams and walls.

Map / Terrain

Stockbird Head is a beautiful deciduous woodland with great contour detail. It has been a little impacted by recent storms with some windblown evident. The steeper slopes on the southern half of the map adds some physicality to the area, whilst the northern part, being a bit flatter, has a great mix of reentrants, knolls and parallel features to keep the orienteering interesting! With the recent dry weather the seasonal marshes and streams are currently very dry!

Course Information

Welcome to Stockbird Head. Get ready for a great evening of orienteering! What course will you go for? The Long has the added excitement of a ‘butterfly loop’ to mix it up a bit. Whilst the Short ensures you also get to enjoy the best bits that the area has to offer!

For the juniors/novices, we have the Yellow and Orange course. These are based on the less steep, northern part of the map making use of some line features and of course the beautiful woodland. Please note that on the Orange course there is taped route between one of the controls.

Full leg cover and a whistle are advised.

Safety bearing is west, which will get you back to a perimeter wall. Don’t worry, the area isn’t too large!

Long 4.3km 210m climb 22 controls

Short 3.0km 150m climb 13 controls

Orange 1.9km 60m climb 10 controls

Yellow 1.1km 35m climb 7 controls

Scale 1:7500 and 5m contours.

Map last updated in 2017, with small amendments in 2024 & 2025.

The map will be size A4 and printed on waterproof paper.
