Galoppen

Regional level event

What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

Many thanks to all for joining us for the joint LOC/WAROC Galoppen today on Wansfell, the final Galoppen for the 2025 series! We were lucky with the weather and we hope you all enjoyed the courses using both the open fell and tricky woodland.

As always, many thanks to all those from both WAROC and LOC for all their hard work and help today to make the event happen, but particularly Julia (WAROC) - Planner; Rach (LOC) - Organiser and Paul (LOC) - Controller.

Unfortunately, we received a comment from a competitor on the Brown course that a number of people were using the lower crossing point, that had been identified in the final details not to be used, due to it's condition. As this would have given those competitors an advantage we have taken the decision to remove the time on that leg, which has made a difference to the results for that course.

LOST PROPERTY: a thumb compass was found outside the Football Club today, on top of one of the storage bins on the verandah, let us know on si@lakelandoc.uk if its yours and we'll arrange to return it.

Stiles

Brown and Blue courses – these courses cross over the top walls and on to the upper slope of Wansfell.  Only the stiles marked must be used as crossing points.  Runners may know of (or see) another wooden stile lower down but it is not marked on the map.  It is not in good condition and should not be used.

All courses going from the high start use a single stile to cross into the woods.  Please be patient and courteous to others using the stile.  Don’t try and climb the wall to get into the woods.  There are usually quite a number of other walkers at the weekend using this route who will be crossing in both directions.  Please let them cross first and be patient.

As it is a Sunday there will be walkers and mountain bikers on the paths in the woods and also on the fell.  Please be aware and take care not to get in anyone’s way.  There will be a sign at the entrance of the woods informing the public of the event.

Course Information

Welcome to the LOC/WAROC Cumbrian Galoppen event at Wansfell & Skelghyll Woods.

High start (fell) – all courses except Yellow

2.2km, 200m climb

Low start (woods) – Yellow

New route to the starts – the route to the low start follows the same route as the high start to just beyond the entrance to the woods.  The high start then turns left uphill and the low start turns right and downhill for 200m.  The routes will be taped so please look out for where the routes diverge.

Walk to the low start from Miller Bridge car park - 1.6km, 75m climb on road and track

Finish – there is one finish close to the entrance of the woods. Competitors will walk past the finish on the way to the starts.

Brown, Blue, Green, S Green, VS Green, Light Green and Orange at the high start. Courses head out onto open fell with some controls in the woods to finish.

Walk to high start from Miller Bridge car park - 2.2km, 200m climb. Follows same route to low start then steep uphill on paths to start on open fell.

Same finish for all courses. All course must only use the gates and stiles marked to cross any walls. Please ensure you download at the Football Club at Miller Bridge car park.

Map updated in 2024 by Martin Bagness. The Wansfell part is the SE facing slope on the Troutbeck side. There are steep contours, lots of marshy areas, some rock detail, ruined walls and streams. Skelghyll Woods has many paths, some high crags and rocky slopes, which can be slippy underfoot. Lots of technical detail here to give a complete contrast to Wansfell.

Given the exposed nature of the terrain, it may well be that cagoules will be compulsory, whatever the weather. In the unfortunate event of turning an ankle a long way from home, you need to keep warm. Full leg cover is compulsory.

The usual range of Galoppen courses will be available from Yellow to Brown.
