Planners Comments from John:
How to provide courses that demanded concentration throughout? On the The Helm that was a challenge. The dense path network limited the scope for technical legs, but did offer route choice. And there was scope for very short off-path legs in the more complex south west part, on which valuable time could still be lost if you were not 100% accurate. From talking to people after, some didn't think carefully enough to make the best route choices and/or got a little lost amongst the thickets, and all said their courses were enjoyable (in spite of the brambles) so I hope the objective was achieved.
My thanks go to the official helper team and to several others who lent a hand on the day – including those at the start who dived in to pick up half the long course maps snatched by a gust of wind and to find stones to weigh them down. The course could so easily have become a score course based on how many maps you could find!
My thanks also to The Helm landowners, Friends of the Lake District and Henry Strickland, and to Edward Woof for the parking field.
