Planner's Comments from Tim:

The challenge with Wansfell and Skelghyll Woods is how to balance the climb (both on the courses and to the start) with access to the best terrain. After some deliberation, and thanks to additional permission from the NT for the route to the start, we went for the middle option with a start higher in the woods, which required a half-hour or so walk, but which allowed the Short to get to the lower part of the fell. I hope you enjoyed the contrast between the contour and rock detail of the fell and the harder route choice in the woods.

The map probably needs an update - certainly the new mountain bike tracks in the woods are an unwelcome distraction and I had to avoid areas where the undergrowth of holly has changed the runnability. There is also an unmapped stile over one of the walls on the fell that was advantageous to those who found it.

Overall however, most comments were positive. The weather was perfect. The views from the fell over Windermere and the Langdale and Coniston fells were stunning, and the woods had thankfully escaped the ravages of the winter storms and were no less beautiful for the bluebells and redwood trees.

Overview

Open fell then wooded hillside with contour and rock detail. There are many additional paths on the open fell, and a couple of recent unmapped mountain bike tracks in the woods. There are some areas of windblow and young holly in the forest where runnability has been reduced, however courses have been planned to avoid them.

There is a single stile between forest and fell, with all courses crossing this in both directions. Please cross this courteously.

There are sheep on the open fell and deer in the forest.
