Overview
Kirkstone is an upland fell area offering orienteering in fell conditions. Much of the terrain is highly technical with many "black" features (crags, extensive boulderfields, etc). The mapped area consists of St Raven’s Edge, the head of Woundale to its east, and a section of the ridge east of Woundale, shown as Hart Crag on the OS map.
There is one footpath that climbs from Kirkstone Pass to the top of St Raven’s Edge (steep and scrambly towards the top) then follows the edge north and eastwards round the head of Woundale, following the line of a wall, partly ruined. Other than this there are few line features.
All courses reach heights of over 590m at St Raven’s Edge, and the long technical at Hart Crag, creating the risk of having to navigate in cloud in poor weather.
The starts and finish will be on St Raven's Edge at a vertical height of 120m above the Kirkstone Pass Inn.
