Report

What a lovely evening to be up on Kirkstone Pass, orienteering on the open fell in the sunshine, with those fantastic views ! It was a fitting end to the Summer Series and we hope you all enjoyed the great courses and weren't too distracted with the view.

As always, many thanks to all the volunteers tonight and throughout this series for all your help. Tonight's roll of honour is: Carol for planning some fantastic courses, Sandy as Series co-ordinator, Loz for manning the start, Rach P for first aid cover, the control collectors Loz, Angie, Carol and Ian H and the SI Team of Ali, Mike and Janet.

Map / Terrain

Map &Terrain – this is open & exposed fell country at 500 - 600m with many varied rock features & crags as well as the usual marshes, now very wet. Care is vital and good studded shoes needed. It is open fell with excellent visibility but if cloud comes down then the technical level becomes quite serious – up to level 5 from 4 and relocation a whole new game! All course climb 75 metres from the start. A good warm up but means you don’t need to get to the top before starting as in previous events.

Map scales

Long and Short 1:7,500

Orange and Yellow 1:5000

Course Information

Yellow Challenge - 1.2km 105m climb - see notes below

Orange extra – 1.5km 125m of climb – see notes

Short tech – 2.9km185m climb

Long tech – 4.2km 220m climb

**You should bring waterproofs, hat and gloves. A notice will be displayed if you need to carry them.

If its good conditions, shorts will be allowed.

Whistles are compulsory.

YELLOW Challenge – this course is designed as an introduction to contours – up, down or across. Unusually it doesn’t follow many line features so an experienced orienteer as a shadower & support is necessary.

ORANGE Extra – as with the Yellow course the Orange course isn’t planned to the guidelines of using line features and obvious attack points for route choice. There are 2 or 3 taped legs but confidence in recognising contour features will help to locate controls.

Orange and Yellow maps will be available at the Start and Registration for selecting the most appropriate course.
