Overview

A brand new area. Courses may include streets, car parks, parkland, playing fields, riverside path, and complex secondary school grounds, depending on route choice.

Controls marked as road edges are all on lamp-posts.

Some competitors may opt to take a route along the edge of the A65. There is a good pavement, and this is a valid route.

All other roads should be fairly quiet.

Many thanks to Queen Elizabeth School for allowing us access to their grounds. Particular thanks to Mike Brooks, who has been our contact at the school.

The long course also visits St Mary's Church. Please note that grassed areas are out-of-bounds so stay on the paths.

Directions / Parking

Parking is at the Queen Elizabeth School playing fields (by their astro pitch). Turning off the A65, this is just after the turning into the new housing development, on the left - it is I think signed as QES visitor and staff parking. If you get to the turning circle + parking outside the school, you need to turn round and go back about 100 metres.

Course Information

There will be 2 courses available - a Long (5.0km) and a Short (2.9km) course.

The main map is at 1:4000. Courses pass through Queen Elizabeth School twice, and extracts of these sections of the course will be on the rear of the map at 1:2000. Take care with control numbers in the school.

A total of 8 races with 5 to count in the series. Runners at night must wear some reflective garment & carry a torch (head-torches are preferable). Runners under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times whilst out on a course.

We encourage running in pairs, this is a must for under 16s (with an adult) but adults can also do this, it is good way to start orienteering particularly at night. Just enter either as the junior for the junior/parent pair or one adult as the adult pair. Email your partner name to loc_si@btinternet.com and state if you want an extra map (£1 payable on the night).
