Map / Terrain
The Helm is simply one hill of limited orienteering technicality but considerable steepness. It is divided into two halves – east and west. The eastern half has short grass and pleasant running no doubt due to the cows and horses that graze there. Please give them a wide berth if you encounter them. The western half is not grazed and so is nastier and scratchier. The bracken for the control sites used was OK 10 days before race day but it is growing fast. Full leg cover is strongly advised.
Parts of long and short courses at the south of the Helm cross several ad-hoc MTB trails/obstacles. Please take care.
There is a wall dividing the two halves and it can only be crossed at marked crossing points. Usually the choice of gate is obvious but the long course has some legs with a choice of gates.
Scale 1:5000 and 5 m contours.
