Report

It did stay dry, just about tonight for our latest Summer Series event at Brathay Hall - a bit different to recent events with more open areas as well as some woodland, buildings, cliffs and less bracken! We hope you all enjoyed the variety of the terrain.

As always, many thanks to everyone involved tonight - Alan H for planning, Rach as Safety and first aid cover, Sandy as Series Co-ordinator, Loz for first aid cover, Gill for collecting parking monies, the control collectors Loz, Liz, Gill and Rach and the SI Team of Ali, Andrew and Scott. Also many thanks to the Brathay Trust for allowing us to use the area and for parking.

Map / Terrain

The grounds of Brathay Estate provide three separate types of terrain:

  • Woodland, which consists of a central block plus a number of small areas round the periphery. There are some contour features, with crags of varying heights, also some areas where Brathay have their outdoor exercise apparatus, which we should avoid. There are areas of windblow. What bracken there is grows in the woodland.
  • A parkland area, which is grassy and bracken-free. The state of marshes will depend on the weather. The parkland contains small areas of runnable woodland, and numerous individual trees, some of which are used as control sites. A good place for improving orienteers to practise compass bearings in a friendly environment.
  • A small area of buildings and driveways.
