Report
Birkrigg Common is an area we all think we know quite well, until we visit it at night ! It was a lovely night up there tonight for the LOC event in the North West Night League (NWNL), with the lights of Ulverston and the Monument on Hoad Hill all visible along with lots of stars.
We hope you enjoyed your courses tonight, as always, there was a core group of volunteers responsible for the event. Many thanks to Jo C for planning, Dick for Safety Controlling and first aid cover, Hannah for helping place and collect controls, the additional control collectors Jo, Dick, Rick B and Liz and the SI Team of Ali, Mike and Gill.

Map / Terrain
Open common land with a network of paths of varying width, interspersed with areas of bracken (which is down), gorse, limestone pavement (which can be slippery), a small quarry, plus the odd man-made feature (e.g. a cairn). Some of the mapped paths are indistinct, while there are also a few unmapped ones. The vegetation boundaries are not currently accurate and should not be relied upon for navigation.
The map will be A4 size, scale 1:7,500 for Blue and Green, !:5000 for Orange, all with 5m contours. Loose control descriptions will be provided (written descriptions for Orange).
Course Information
Blue 5.6 km, 175m of climb, 15 controls
Green 3.8 km, 105m of climb, 10 controls
Orange 1.8 km, 45m of climb, 9 controls
Safety information
The Blue course crosses a minor road twice, please take care. The area is elevated and exposed, with ‘feels like’ temperatures forecast to be close to freezing. You are recommended to carry a spare warm layer, hat and gloves, and shoes with good grip. If the weather is bad, it may be compulsory to also wear or carry a hooded waterproof jacket. You should bring one to the event. Notices will be displayed in the car park if required. You must carry a whistle, have a good head torch that is suitable for navigation, and carry a spare torch. A compass is essential. Carrying a mobile phone is recommended. Anyone travelling on their own, should leave car keys at registration. Any participants with high risk medical conditions, may leave details with the organisers (confidentially). Because this is a night event in very cold weather, competitors must carry a means of telling the time and ensure they have finished by the course closing time of 7.30pm. If anyone remains out after this time, you can rely on the organiser having called the police and requested an MRT turnout to make a search for you. If you are likely to take a long time, please start early, run a shorter course or be sure to retire in good time to get to the finish by 7.30pm.
Distance to start from registration approximately 200m, and from finish to download approximately 100m, both level.
Course closing time 7.30pm
Don’t forget to punch the safety control and download immediately after your run.
