What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

What a lovely evening it was to be out on Birkrigg Common this evening for some fun orienteering - we hope you all enjoyed your courses and the views and the fun part in the quarry at the end on the long and short courses! 

Tonight's roll call of honour of helpers to thank includes James for planning, Nick for safety, Sandy as Series Co-ordinator, Rob B for helping put controls out, Kev and Lindsay for first aid cover, the control collectors James, Nick, Iain, Derek R, Amanda R, Sandy and Eadaoin and the SI Team of Mike, Sandy and Gill.

Pre-event Details

Map / Terrain

Birkrigg is a lowland fell with gentle sloping contours, old mining works, limestone pavement and the most stunning views across the south lakes and across Morecambe Bay. 

The yellow and orange course focus on line features such as paths, fences and crags. 

The long and short course cross the road bounding the area. Exceptional care must be taken when crossing the roads!

All Courses will use a map at the Scale 1:7500 and 5 m contours. Long and Short will also use a 1:2000 with a 0.5 m Contour interval map 

Maps last updated in year 2025.

The map will be size A4 and printed on waterproof paper. Both Long and short courses the map will be double sided. 

Course Information

Long - 5.3 Km - 160m - 30 Controls  

Short - 3.6km - 135m - 22 Controls 

Orange - 1.9km - 30m - 13 Controls 

Yellow - 1.7km - 25m - 10 Controls

Distance to 400 m start, and 40m climb

Distance from finish, 25m and 0m climb

Course closing time 20:00

Anyone on the long course will require a dibber capable of holding 30+ punches, anyone with a V5 or V8 dibber, or requesting a hired one, will be allocated one automatically to collect from Registration (check your dibber here).

Entry Details

Online entries are available via SiEntries. Online entry will close at 23:59 on Sunday 7th June, some entry on the day will also be available.

Fees for online entry:
 

  • £6 for seniors who are members of either British Orienteering (BO) or LOC
  • £7 for seniors who are not members of either BO or LOC
  • £4 for juniors and Full-Time students
  • Free for LOC Juniors

Fees for entry on the day (Cash only & correct change please):

  • £7 for seniors who are members of either BO or LOC
  • £8 for seniors who are not members of either BO or LOC
  • £4 for juniors and full-time students
  • Free for LOC Juniors

Dog restrictions

Dogs under control, the area is farmed with plenty of sheep across the common.
