Success at British Night Championships 202219th Feb 2022 on Ilkley Moor

Congratulations to Laura Brown who finished 3rd in W18 at the British Night Championships - see Laura's report on the event below.

Well done to anyone competing in the snowy conditions on the night.

I felt pretty nervous going into the event especially due to the anticipation of the weather and also being pretty physically and mentally tired from 3 days of race training with the Talent Squad, however as soon as I saw the snow that got me a bit more excited and I must admit I did have a little snow ball fight as soon as I got out the mini bus (I couldn’t resist!!!!)

After spending a while sorting out all my kit and deciding just how many layers to wear for the cold weather, I set off for the frosty run. Only then did I get properly nervous when I saw the hill.

Set off and the race started well but a bit slow, but then I managed to pick up the pace and get a steady rhythm going. The most helpful thing was all the elephant tracks to help you weave through all the snow and the rocks! About half way through the race I made a few questionable route choices to a few controls which lost me a bit of time and was starting to get quite tired in the cold, but I managed keep the pace going with minimal mistakes after that.

Walking back from the finish was great as I was looking forward to the warmth and some food, whilst also chatting to some friends and regaining some feeling back in my toes. When back at assembly I had some lovely cakes and a nice cup of tea as a treat for the successful race, then it was time for the presentation in a nice warm building (certainly can’t complain!!!)
