Spring 2021 technique knowhow and Masterclasses

Mon 1 Feb 2021

Technique knowhow and Masterclasses will be presented in a series of Zoom sessions.

The first sessions took place sucessfully on Saturday 30th January, followed by two Zoom presentations (6th and 20th February) with some of our elite runners explaining how they do it and what is going on in their heads from which we can learn.

Following on from the previous sessions, where it became clear that our guest speakers had no magic formula - they were using simple techniques, but using them well, all the time, and with confidence.

The two skills - compass and map-reading - have to work together in a system, so there will be quite a lot of overlap between sessions 4 and 5 on the 27th February and 6th March.

Session 4 took place (27th February) with Jenny and Oli Johnson, both ex-internationals, zooming in from Sheffield to join us discussing the use of compass.

Consider the long leg on the attached Holme Fell map, instructions are on the map and Hector Haynes' video.

The 5th of the masterclasses took place on Saturday 6th March at 17.30. It is focused on how map-reading can work together with the compass as part of a system which can be relied on for any leg in any kind of terrain, with Graham Gristwood and Fanni Gyurko, both international champions.

Session 6 (Saturday 13th) covered urban sprints with another GB Squad member, vision correction with Graham Patten, a WMOC medallist and professional optician, and some time on distance judgement, pacing and relocation.

Session 7 was added on the 20th March to give more time to distance judgement and pacing since there was not enough time on the 13th March, Derek Allison joined Carol and Martin.

Session 8 on the 10th April led by Martin Bagness covered Map Making, particularly looking at the types of base maps (PG plots, LIDAR, etc.) and creation of the final Orientering maps from those base maps.

The recordings of the sessions are below.

  • Masterclass 1 (6th February) - here.
  • Masterclass 2 (20th February) - here.
  • Use of compass (27th February) - here.

  • Map-reading (6th March) - here.

  • Final issues (13th March) - Part 1 and Part 2.

  • Pace counting and distance estimation (20th March) - here.

  • Map making (10th April) - here

Unfortunately there was a short break in the recording of the session on 13th March after about 10 minutes (Part 1) and a couple of minutes were lost before restarted it (Part 2), apologies for that and I hope it doesn't spoil anyone's viewing.

If you would like to join the next session just email () and you will be sent the link and detail information.

The LOC zoom coaching sessions are £3 (FREE FOR JUNIORS U18) and everyone will be asked to pay for the sessions they attend at the end of March. We might have to limit numbers so don’t leave it to the last minute. Payment will be probably by BACS to LOC, details will be sent although vouchers can be used. Excess funds will go towards the British Squad Fund.

Also, occasional zoom sessions will be set up to explore the use of different techniques, O-quizzes, Q & A, even tests for those who are missing that sort of thing.

Due to the latest Covid 19 restrictions and the insistence that people should stay at home and not travel unless it is necessary the advertised Coaching sessions from 30th January to 20th March 2021 will be postponed until further notice.
