Orienteering Masterclass Sessions

Mon 1 Feb 2021

Carol McNeill has organised four Masterclasses to be introduced by Martin Bagness.

We are using Zoom presentations with some of our elite runners explaining how they do it and what is going on in their heads from which we can learn.

Saturday 30th January

Carol provided an introduction to the series and Martin provided 4 PDF map files with suggested techniques which can be used for Orienteers to develop their navigation skills particularly in the lockdown period.

The links to the files are in available here.

Saturday 6th February

Hector Haines interviewed Grace Malloy and Cecilie Andersen on their top runs at Rusland Beeches at the Elite weekend in October.

Check it out on the LOC website under ‘results’ (3rd October 2020)  and have a read of the ‘On the Red Line –Elite Orienteering Report’ – our interviewees star again. The recording of the session is here.

Saturday 20th February

Hector interviewed Graham Gristwood on his winning run at Graythwaite (Elite weekend again) and our local rising star Alistair Thomas (WCOC) on his amazing run at Mesopotamia (28th December) – another session not to be missed. The recording of the session is here.

Check it out on the LOC website under ‘results’ (3rd October 2020 and December 28th)  and have a read of the ‘On the Red Line –Elite Orienteering Report’ (link below) – our interviewees star again.

Saturday 27th February

The topic of this session was 'Use of Compass'  with Jenny and Oli Johnson, both ex-internationals, zooming in from Sheffield to join us.

Consider the long leg on the attached Holme Fell map, instructions are on the map and Hector Haynes' video.

The recording of the session is here.

Saturday 6th March

The 5th of the masterclasses was focused on how map-reading can work together with the compass as part of a system which can be relied on for any leg in any kind of terrain, with Graham Gristwood and Fanni Gyurko, both international champions.

The recording of the session is here.

Saturday 13th March

This will be our last zoom coaching sessions this Spring and hope that it will be as enlightening as all the others. Led again by Martin we have a variety of items lined up.

1. Urban sprints with another GB Squad member – lots of decision making for all of us.

2. Graham Patten - WMOC medallist - will offer his professional expertise on eyesight correction options.

3. Distance judgement and pacing

4. Relocation – a brief overview.

The recording of the session will be here.
