Junior coaching between Lockdowns in 2020 & 2021

Mon 21 Jun 2021

Since the start of the pandemic, during the relaxation of restrictions between the 3 waves, a small group of 15s & 16s have been training in the local woods & fells under the supervision of Club coach Richard Tiley.

Amelia Thompson, Laura Brown & Peter Scott have been ever present with Dylan Kenny, Emily Turner, Gilly Wells & Becca O’Donovan joining in when evening jobs & school work allowed. In 2021 Jess Bailey joined the group.

During September & October 2020 the 8 evening sessions focussed on contour shapes & feature recognition. Once the clocks moved then there was another 7 weeks night orienteering with head torches focussing on compass direction.

Once the winter 2020 lockdown eased then March & April 2021 have seen coaching sessions alternate with the “LOC Back to O” series of local events.

I am sure you will have seen their names near the top of the results lists.

The aim for this year was the JROS summer training camps, which meant doing well at the Junior selection race weekend of June 4th/5th/6th. A sprint race in Keswick on the Friday evening, followed by the British Middles & Northern Champs races. There were some mixed results in these very technical areas.

Amelia Thompson & Jess Bailey have been selected to the 15s camp at Badaguish, near Aviemore. Laura Brown has been selected to the 16s camp at Deeside, near Aberdeen.

Further details on the British Orienteering Junior Regional Orienteering Squads webpage.

Congratulations to them all.
