Turkey Race 1

Local level event

What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships.

Report

We hope you all enjoyed today's event planned and organised by Alan Heppenstall, helped by Gill and Derek on an excellent area and held in intersting conditions. The Results and Splits are attached.

The Results and Registration were done by Mike, Dave and Claire, and hopefully we'll see you for the other two Turkey Races this week.

Last updated: Thu 28 April, 2022

Overview

The orienteering area is entirely open, with terrain varying from runnable grass, mainly on higher parts, to bracken (died back) and mostly crossable tussocky bog. There are several small tarns / ponds which are uncrossable, but it is obvious which these are and the disused reservoir is also obvious.

The highest point shown on the OS map is 185m, making this an exposed upland area with no tree cover anywhere, with the possibility of being in cloud in poor weather.

The following courses will be available:

Course Lenth (km) Climb (m) Controls
Long 5.0 225 14
Short 3.6 160 10
Yellow 1.6 50 11

The Long and Short courses will be technical (TD5), the maps will be at the start.

The Yellow course is TD2, and this is intended for juniors or inexperienced adults interested in taking up the sport. Runners including pre-entries should pick up their Yellow course maps at the EOD point. Juniors can be shadowed if appropriate provided that the shadower runs their own course before they shadow.

The map scale will be 1:7500.

There will be a safety control after the Finish, please punch there as you go past as it is an important part of our safety strategy.

The Start will be 600m from parking and it will be 500m from the Finish back to Download.

Course will close at 14.30 and controls will be collected after that time.

Please remember to return to Download as soon as possible when you have finished your run.

Safety Bearing - anyone seriously lost should make their way NE-wards, when they will reach a path sooner or later. Keep to high ground as far as possible. Heading east across extensive marshes should be avoided.

Heading west from the area will lead to a minor road, therefore safe but a long way back to assembly and car parking.
