Night Terrain 1 - Kendal Golf Club and Serpentine Woods

Entry will be as described in the 'Registration & Start Times' section using a combination of e-mail and Si Card registration - it will open soon.

Since there is a revised tier definition after the current lockdown ends on the 2nd December we respectfully request that competitors from tier 3 areas do not enter the event in the interest of reducing the risk of transmission.

Splits printouts will be provided at Download but there will be NO results on display at the event. The results will be presented on the LOC website ASAP afterwards as usual.

The Start list including times or start slot times will be included after the entries have closed. 

As usual the controls including the Finish will be SiAC enabled.

Coronavirus (COVID 19)

Remember that we must operate under the BOF and Government guidelines in terms of Coronavirus (COVID 19) so please consider the following before entering and note that it is important that everyone observes the restrictions.

To prevent transmission of the virus hand sanitiser must be used where provided, particularly before Registration, map pickup (at the Start) and Download and we request that you wear a face mask at Registration and Download.

Fitness to Attend

Competitors must not attend the event if any of the following apply:

  • They or someone in their household have displayed symptoms of Covid-19 in the past 14 days
  • They or someone in their household has been tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 14 days
  • The test and trace service has asked them to self-isolate at the present time
  • A medical professional has advised or asked them to self-isolate in the past 14 days

Social Distancing

We will be following BOF’s Covid guidelines but trust everyone will be using their common sense to ensure that all competitors are as safe as possible.

We insist that the number and mix of people in any single group must not break the Government and BOF rules and Guideline. This includes the parking field, the Start, Finish and Download.

We respecrfully ask you to arrive just before you need to go your start  for your start time, and to leave the event as soon as possible after you have finished and downloaded – there can be no comparing of route choices and splits discussion in the car park.

Anyone coming will be expected to adhere to social distancing measures at all times, only travelling to the event with members of their own household or bubble, keeping 2 metres apart whilst attending and using hand sanitiser/washing their hands as appropriate, particularly at the Start and Download.

Registration & Start Times

Registration will open at 17.00.

Because of the COVID requirements we will need to apply some additional entry processing. In order to avoid people grouping and to spread the runners over the available start period the registration process requires competitors to e-mail DIck Towler (as below), and before running they must register their Si Cards using our normal 'dibber registration' at Registration/Download. They can then go to the start for their allocated start slot. 

 E-mail - All those who intend to come to the event must send an e-mail to  Dick Towler at ‘’ providing:

  • Name
  • Age class
  • Course
  • SI card number
  • Preferred start slot 
  • Mobile phone number

Those intending to attend most or all of the LOC night events should inform Dick in their e-mail including preferred time slots and they can avoid e-mailing for each event separately.   

The phone number is required for event safety and Track and Test.

Starts will be between 17.30 and 18.30 with a maximum of 1 start per minute. Start intervals will use 15 minute slots, each taking a maximum of 15 runners, and the Start Windows for your preferred entries are:

  • 17.30-17.45
  • 17.45-18.00
  • 18.00-18.15
  • 18.15-18.30

E-mail entries will open soon.

There will be a limit of 60 based on the start interval. If any of the 15 minute time slots is overloaded in terms of the number of requests we may have to move some people to other time slots but they will be contacted by e-mail if that’s the case.

SI card registration - we will use SI card registration for runners at our Night events. However, there will be NO SI cards available for hire on an event by event basis so anyone entering must have an SI card, preferably registered to them on the Sportident database.

Payment - will also be taken at Registration in cash or LOC vouchers dropped into a sealed bucket, however the exact amount should be paid because no change can be given.

Any LOC members who DO NOT own an Si Card and would like to enter this or any of the possible events in the near future can borrow one (Si Card 5) until the crisis is over, please e-mail  with your name, Ageclass/gender, Year of Birth, BOF no., and I will arrange that one can be collected at the first event you attend. There will be the usual £30 fee for a lost SI Card.

Some competitors may be asked to stay until 19.30 when courses close in case someone fails to return on time.

Course Information

The following courses will be offered:

  • Long  - <length>
  • Short  - <length>

It will be 100m from Registration to the Start, and 20m back from the Finish to the Download. The Finish will close at 19.30, please return to the Download as soon as possible after that time.

Courses will close at 19.30 and you must return to DOWNLOAD as soon as possible even if you retire to avoid the event team having to initiate a search at the end of the event.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

The entry fees will be:

  • Seniors:   £4
  • Juniors/Students:   £2

Payment will be made at the event by dropping vouchers or cash (the exact amount only) into a sealed bucket, no change can be given.

Pre-existing medical conditions which may be relevant during the event should be declared when you enter or written down and handed into Enquiries in an envelope. 



Competitors must carry a suitable lamp, a reserve torch and a whistle.

In bad weather waterproof jackets must also be carried or worn, in which case this will be notified at registration. Waterproof overtrousers, a hat and gloves may also be made compulsory if the weather is more extreme. Competitors are encouraged to carry a mobile telephone so that they can summon assistance in the event of an incident.

First aid

Companions will be asked to take injured people to hospital if needed.

Important Information

Safety and Risk: A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser.

Runners MUST download even if they retire so we can be sure everyone is back and that we do not need to start a search and rescue.

Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
