Map / Terrain

Sand dunes

The map is a total lidar re-survey at 1:5000, using ISSOM (sprint) map specification. The area has been extended seawards so be aware that some water features are tidal as well as seasonal. The sandy nature of the area and random public use means that clarity of paths on the ground is variable, especially in the eastern area nearest the start/finish.

Full leg cover isn’t compulsory but advised (gorse, hawthorn and occasional bramble strands).
The terrain is typical dune succession covering a strip of land next to the mouth of the Duddon estuary. The majority is marram grass covered sand dunes with complex contour detail and limited paths. Inland there are more mature, vegetated dunes and an area of seasonal marsh. There are small patches of gorse, willow, buckthorn and hawthorn as well as isolated bushes. This is an opportunity to test your skills on complex dune contours before the Scottish 6 days event.
Competitors on the yellow course in particular will need to be made aware that there are many unmapped small paths.
The area has no tree cover and sunscreen may be advisable.
Sheep graze in the area, so remember to check for ticks after your run.
You must carry a whistle.
