Planner Comments from Rob:

I hope you all enjoyed the blustery but otherwise pleasant evening and the varied challenges of the terrain. There's quite a contrast from the steep rough fell to the gentler moorland, but from the times some can shift at warp speed over both. From routes on RouteGadget I conclude that the change of pace needed moving from the fellside to the moor caught out some, and some need to know that marshes with a black border and thick hatching are uncrossable..... or apparently not. I expected that many competitors on short would use the track to descend from 2 to 3, but I think most went directly down. thanks to Carol and Ric for collecting controls.

Overview

All is open fell. The NW part is steep and craggy with extensive contour and rock detail. The SE part is gentle with subtle contour detail and extensive marshes. Very few line features.

Long and Short courses will use both parts of the terrain though the Short will be less physical than Long. Orange will use just the gentler part.

The terrain is high and exposed so be prepared for this if the weather is bad. If so a waterproof jacket with head covering may be compulsory.
