Bell and Bank woods are full of evidence of the old woodland industries with plenty of flat ‘platforms’ used as charcoal burning areas. These stand out in the landscape and make good control sites. Old tracks are still evident and easy to follow but equally easy to miss if your route crosses them. Bank Wood has a few areas of wind blow which are best avoided above rather than below. They may be shown as green stripes – good visibility but poor runnability.

An old fence which goes diagonally through Bell Wood has one dangerous single strand of wire about 1metre high – this will be taped on obvious route lines but ’beware’.

The wood varies from glorious runnable beech & oak to rough & rocky with bracken growing fast. The open farm areas are ‘roughly’ mapped & should be stock free.

OOB – please do not enter areas marked as OOB or cross walls/fences apart from designated crossing points. – wall gaps, gates and stiles.

Course Information

Start – is 300metres through the wood. Courses close 19.30 when controls will be collected

Courses: The maps will be printed on the back of old, out of date maps (& no controls). This is our new good “reuse” policy. Just be prepared at the start.

Yellow/White 1.5km 100m climb. map scale - 1:5,000. The course follows line features with route/feature knowledge required such as walls, fences, streams, vegetation boundaries, old woodland paths or two of these on one leg. I leg is taped between control points and tapes are also used to negotiate areas of fallen trees. Adult support recommended for less experienced.- please explain what the many brown lines (contours) are – showing the shape and steepness of the ground. “Are you going to go up/down or along?” as well as “What do I follow next?”

Lost? Ask someone where you are and/which is the best way to the finish & download

Orange 1.5km. 160m climb. map scale - 1:5,000. Line features to follow with more route choice than the yellow course. Chances to cut corners and use a compass.

Short – 2.8km 1:5,000 a technical course on steep rocky ground in Bell Wood finishing across farmland.

Long – 4.5km 1:7,500 a techy course in Bell AND BANK wood. Bank Wood, typical of the steep woods on the East side of Coniston Water has only been used once before. The area includes some open, lightly wooded farmland. Crossing points and taped routes to cross the minor road between woods must be followed.

Both woods are full of evidence of the old woodland industries with plenty of flat ‘platforms’ used as charcoal burning areas.
