This was the first full colour coded event I have planned and got the job at fairly
short notice which meant I was rather limited in the amount of time I spent on the
ground. Ulpha Park is a pretty tough and physical place with distinct areas of
different types of terrain which are not easy to link up. I wanted to get as many
courses up to the recently mapped northern block of woodland as possible but also
keeping the amount of climb to a minimum for the shorter courses. The hardest
courses to plan in an area like this is are yellow and orange. I think the
youngsters enjoyed the chance to run through the woods following streams and the
river. I tried to keep the 'green' courses off the steepest slopes and where it was
unavoidable then to go down them. The blue and in particular the brown courses got
to sample some the toughest and steepest bits. I think the lengths of the technical
courses were perhaps 10% too long given the nature of some of the area. Having said
that, you got your monies worth and I was pleased to get many positive comments.
I would like to thank my two! controllers, Dave Nield and Clare Evans, for their
words of wisdom and control collectors and putter outers Heather Burrows, Helen
Nield, Diana McClure, Anne and Richard Wilson, and Rick Browne for helping sort out
gates and crossing points.
