Map

A3 Kendal Urban map produced by Martin Bagness in 2010 & 2011 using a 1:4000 scale with 5m contour intervals and IOF Standard Sprint Symbols. Familiarise yourself with these symbols at http://maprunner.org.uk/simon/sprintmapsymbols.jpg as there is no Legend on the map.

In particular, be aware of the special thicker symbols - the “Uncrossables” – Wall, Fence, Railing, Hedge, Building - which show features that must not be crossed. Olive Green coloured land is also uncrossable and should be considered as if it was shown with the more familiar “Out of Bounds” stripes. Any competitors having split times that show usage of “Uncrossables” will be disqualified. Adults, please ensure that Juniors are aware of these symbols. Ignoring the “Uncrossables” is likely to stop the usage of Orienteering in this urban area.

Control Descriptions

Courses A to F have IOF pictorial descriptions on the front of the map. Course G Young Juniors and the Newcomer Challenge Courses have text descriptions.

Many of the IOF pictorial descriptions used for this competition are rare in forest events. It is worth learning about them if this type of event is new to you. They can be found here

Advice on Courses and Eligibility to Enter

All competitors on courses A,B,C,D & E must have passed their sixteenth birthday on the day of the race. This is an insurance requirement.

UK Masters Cup: In order to score in their appropriate five-year age class for UKMC, runners should run one of courses A - E in accordance with the above table. In particular, M35s should run Course A and W35s Course B

Courses A, B, C, D & E will cross roads with regular uncontrolled traffic flows. In order to comply with insurance requirements, all competitors on these courses must have passed their sixteenth birthday on the day of the race.

Course F will include some controlled and some uncontrolled road crossings.

Course G Parental/Guardian accompaniment will be needed for children on this course & it will not count for the Nopesport League. The course will cross one of the main traffic routes through the town at a junction controlled by traffic lights with a  push-button request phase for pedestrians. Competitors must cross only when the 'Green Man' shows but there will be no time-out allowance. Other roads crossed will not have regular traffic flows and will be uncontrolled.

Provisional Course Lengths
A  7.9k
B  6.6k
C  5.5k
D  4.5k
E  2.8k
F  3.3k
G  1.4k

These lengths are based on straight line measurements between controls but competitors can expect to cover approximately a third further than these distances, ie. for Course A about 10.6k with an estimated winning time of 55 minutes. The majority of competitors can expect to be on hard surfaces for 95% of their course - exceptions are Course A which will be about 10% on soft surfaces and Course F about 55% soft.

Newcomer's Challenge

A special introductory challenge for newcomers to Urban Orienteering can be found near the finish area in the Market Place between 12noon and 2pm. This is for Adults with or without families. Cost £4 per entry, i.e. solo adult or family group.

Additional Information

Event Centre

Kendal Town Hall, Highgate, Kendal, LA9 4DL, GR SD 515 926. This is a significant building with a clock tower, adjacent to traffic signals on the main street through the town centre

Facilities in the Town Hall comprise entry enquiries, EOD, SI card hire, toilets, clothing and car key deposit. Pre-entered competitors not requiring any of these facilities do not need to enter the Town Hall.

NB Competitors on Course A (Men’s Open) will need to collect a new series SI card (numbered 1000000+) if they don’t already have one

Controls

All controls will be tied by Gripples to urban furniture to secure the SI Boxes and kites. The control number will only be displayed on the SI box. There will not be any Pin Punches at the controls.

Start

300 metres from the Town Hall – follow signed route.

SI card clear boxes will be located at pre-start. Call-up will be at –3minutes for SI card check and collection of loose description sheets. Blank maps will be displayed at –2minutes. There will be a ‘punching’ start.

Shadowing of Juniors

Adults on Courses A – E wishing to shadow a Junior on Course F or accompany a Young Junior on Course G or a Newcomer Challenge Course must run their own course first or declare themselves non-competitive.  Shadowed Juniors on Course F are also non-competitive.

Road Crossings

Timed Road Crossings will be needed on nearly all courses in various ways. These are shown on the Map and Control Descriptions as Crossing Points.

A 1 minute timed crossing means you can take up to one minute to cross without being timed.

You don’t get any bonus for doing it in less!

If you take more than one minute, your time is registered as the excess over a minute.

Courses A to D all have the same 1 minute timed crossing. This will not be manned and is the responsibility of the runners. There should be plenty of time to cross the possibly busy narrow road into town. At quiet times an occasional fast driver may appear.

Course F has two controlled timed crossings one of 1 minute & the other of 3minutes. Listen to the information from the marshals in their yellow tops.

Course G juniors must cross the main road at the Town Hall with their Adult support.

They must wait for the Green Man Pedestrian Lights.

This course is not to be used for a race. Moving and parked vehicles can be encountered anywhere on this course.

Adults should remain with their juniors throughout the course.

Finish

Located within 300metres of the Town Hall. Weather permitting, download and screened results display will also be located here, otherwise in the Town Hall. Courses will close at 2.30pm. You must report to download even if you fail to complete your course.

First Aid

First aid provision will be close to the Finish. Minor injuries services are available at the Westmorland General Hospital, LA9 7RG, 2km south of the town centre off the A65, Burton Road at GR SD 524 902.

Urban Safety

You participate in this event at your own risk. However, please also consider the safety of members of the public - pedestrians, riders and drivers. Be courteous and take extra care not to collide with or intimidate pedestrians, especially when exiting from narrow passageways and turning corners – slow down and run wide. Take care crossing trafficked roads and do not compromise the judgement of drivers.
